Minister Mélanie Joly: Intervene NOW against the persecution on Christians!

Did you hear about the injustice happening right now against Ehsan Shan, a 22-year-old Pakistani Christian man?
Probably not. Do you know why? Because the media are not talking about it!
Well, let me tell you the whole story. Ehsan Shan has just been sentenced to death. His crime? Posting an image of a damaged Quran on TikTok.
In August 2023, the man was thrown into prison, and then, on July 1st, the Anti-Terrorism Court of Sahiwal handed down a merciless death sentence.
As if this brutality was not enough, he is condemned to endure 22 agonizing years behind bars and pay a crushing fine of one million rupees (about $5,000 CAD) before facing his grim execution.
Persecution against Christians and other religious minorities is worsening. The incident with Ehsan Shan exemplifies this ongoing injustice in Pakistan.
We've seen this before with Asia Bibi: this young Christian mother and wife was imprisoned for many years on false blasphemy charges and sentenced to death, and eventually freed thanks to remarkable international pressure. And now, history is repeating itself.
Christians in Pakistan are always at risk. They are targeted for their faith and find themselves constantly facing baseless and fabricated charges, risking arrest and ending up on death row. This is a blatant violation of their rights. Christians should live freely without fearing for their lives because of their religion.
The 2023 Report by International Christian Concern (ICC), an organization dedicated to defending persecuted Christians worldwide, has named Pakistan among the top ten most perilous countries for Christians, alongside nations like Nigeria, North Korea, Iran, China, and others.
How many innocent Pakistanis are wrongfully accused? How many Christians are relentlessly targeted and persecuted daily just for their faith?
CitizenGO has not only fought for Asia Bibi: in 2019, we took action for Shagufta and Shafqat, husband and wife, and celebrated their release, and in 2022, we highlighted the plight of Ashfaq Masih, a 36-year-old husband and father, who, according to recent updates, remains in prison under the shadow of a death sentence. And to these, many other cases can be added.
The tragic case of Ehsan Shan is part of the vicious cycle of violence that erupted in Jaranwala, Punjab, on August 16, 2023. In that occasione, an enraged mob attacked Christians, assaulting up to 21 churches and private homes. Bibles were burned, and worshippers were driven from their homes.
This wave of fury against the Christian community stemmed from a accusation of Quran desecration. According to various sources, it appears to be the Quran whose photos were posted by Ehsan.
The blasphemy law in Pakistan makes this possible: a Christian takes an action which is considered offensive by a Muslim, a report is made. The police swoop in to arrest the Christian, and the court, wielding this notorious dangerous law, can impose a death sentence. What begins as a minor incident can spiral into a life-and-death ordeal, culminating in a horrifying execution.
Do you realize how terrible this situation is?
Bishop Samson Shukardin, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan, has called for international intervention. He believes that pressure from international NGOs and human rights organizations can make a big impact.
For this reason, as you can see, CitizenGO is in the front line to ask to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take action.
Minister Mélanie Joly and her office have the power to act. They can engage in diplomatic talks with Pakistan to advocate for Ehsan Shan. They can raise international awareness and bring the case in front of the UN. Minister Mélanie Joly can also coordinate with allies for a powerful response and issue public statements condemning the sentence.
No one talks about it, but it is a silent plague that every single day, thousands of Christians face, amid the silence of the majority. They are marginalized, treated as less than human, simply because they are a minority and, most importan, a Christian minority. If you search the internet, you will uncover countless stories of this suffering.
We desperately need to ensure that Ehsan's life is spared, but we cannot stop there. Our ultimate mission is to contribute to the abolishment of Pakistan's barbaric blasphemy laws, ending the horrific suffering of Christians and defending the essential right to freedom of religion for all.
This petition can work because we know the power that petitions and advocacy campaigns can have when backed by extraordinary public support...starting from YOURS!
We succeeded in the case of Asia Bibi and in the case of Shagufta and Shafqat...and we can succeed again!
But the intervention of civil society and governments is crucial. For Asia Bibi, activists from around the world launched petitions and organized campaigns. This led to her freedom. We must mobilize again.
We refuse to stay silent while Christians are continuously targeted and persecuted. Another Christian life could be lost to unjust accusations.
If we step up, we can try to contribute saving this young man's life. We can offer hope to persecuted Christians worldwide by showing that the international community stands with them.

Kamala Harris is the most radical, pro-abortion, pro-transing kids, and anti-family candidate in the history of the United States. She's a relentless former prosecutor who likes to use power to go after people who threaten said power. The Hub editorial calls the change an invocation of the concept of “charter supremacy,” and suggests that, because of the decision, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms will now supersede all other Canadian legislation:
Power also offends the separation of powers by holding the Crown liable for the acts of the legislature. While the concept of Crown liability for damages is well-accepted in Canada, both under the common law and pursuant to s.24(1) of the Charter, that liability has always been anchored to the acts of the Crown and its agents—never to Parliament. Power extends this historic concept of Crown liability without explaining how one branch of the state can be liable for the acts of another. Does this now mean the Crown is also vicariously liable for unconstitutional acts of the judiciary?
Underlying the majority’s decision is the notion of “Charter Supremacy.” The implication of Power is that the adoption of the Charter in 1982 was nothing short of a revolution, upending Canada’s prior order, and establishing a new hierarchy of constitutional law in which the Charter—whose meaning is ever-changing—stands at the apex. Put bluntly, this is not the Constitution our country adopted.
It should therefore surprise no one if legislatures now invoke the Charter’s notwithstanding clause under s.33 with even greater regularity than they have in recent years—though even that might prove ineffective since the Supreme Court could potentially find that damages under s.24(1) can still be awarded where s.33 has been invoked. The notion that a law could operate (per s.33) but still give rise to a damages award is conceptually incoherent and would be an egregious misinterpretation of the Charter. But this position already has some support in the academy—and in the wake of Power, it can no longer be considered so far-fetched.
In the circumstances, it would be entirely proper for the federal government to spearhead a constitutional amendment to restore institutional balance. Attempts at grand amendments to the Constitution are bound to fail; a surgical amendment of this nature could very well succeed, however. Seven provinces representing 50 percent of the population would need to sign on, but this seems plausible since, presumably, every province would want to insulate itself from potentially significant damages awards and protect the independence of its internal legislative processes. Indeed, the provinces’ attorneys general were united before the Supreme Court in opposing the position the majority ultimately adopted.
Failing an amendment, it will be left to trial and intermediate appellate courts to pick up the pieces. Even granting Power’s premise that an incorporeal legislature could somehow exhibit bad faith, it remains an open question of how bad faith will be proven in a particular case. What sort of evidence will tend to support or refute an allegation that the legislature—as opposed to any individual legislator—acted in bad faith? What documents will the Crown be compelled to produce for discovery? What privileges, if any, will it be able to assert? These questions and more will need to be answered by lower court justices, who will be faced with the unenviable task of developing doctrine from scratch.

One month after the new Labour government has taken power, the country has been engulfed in riots – in the north and south – that are ostensibly driven by far-right groups, and at the same time Muslim youths in cities like Bolton.
The riots were triggered by the murder of three children in a stabbing attack in Southport, and a specific tactic has been to target hotels and accommodation centres used for asylum seekers.
The tactics deployed in the riots appear to be coordinated on social media (by far right groups and potentially other actors), and are suspiciously all too similar to the pattern of recent riots in Ireland.
For background, in November 2023 following a knife attack on a group of children in Dublin (by an alleged migrant) riots erupted in the city centre , and recently there have been violent protests in Dublin (against the housing of asylum seekers). At the time I had spoken to a number of European experts on the ‘far-right’, who mentioned that within an hour of the Dublin protests starting, far-right WhatsApp groups across Europe were animated.
This suggests that there is an element of coordination by the far-right in the violent protests (as well as a template for action), which have happened in many cities. Of interest, Irish far-right groups (of which there are few) have joined far-right protest groups in Belfast (unionists/loyalists), and historically it would have been unimaginable for them to combine.
There are several policy strands here.
The first relates to the policing effort and here police forces across the UK are severely stretched (police chiefs have described the violence as ‘staggering’). There will also be efforts by the security forces to track and halt the coordination of the attacks. The scale of the attacks is weighing not only on the police but also on the criminal justice system (which needs reform and money, and the prison system (already over crowded).

The Quebec study found that that 11.2% of abortions in the second trimester have resulted in live births, but only 10% of the survivors live over three hours.
(LifeSiteNews) — A Quebec study has revealed that over one in ten babies aborted in the second trimester are born alive, but only 10 percent live over three hours.
In June, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published “Second-Trimester Abortion and Risk of Live Birth,” a Quebec study which found that 11.2 percent of abortions in the second trimester have resulted in live births.
“It is more common for infants to be born alive following abortions than most people recognize,” pro-life advocate Melissa Ohden wrote in her weekly newsletter. “Sadly, most people don’t even know that babies survive abortions at all, or they’re led to believe there are just a few of us.”
“The terms ‘abortion survivor’ and ‘born alive infant’ are often polarizing terms, equated as fictional stories fabricated to restrict ‘reproductive rights,'” she continued “Still, these circumstances are simply a relatively understood, underreported, and under-studied reality.”
Indeed, the Quebec study revealed that a staggering number of babies are born alive after being aborted. The study analyzed 13,777 abortions performed on babies in the second trimester, between 15-29 weeks’ gestation, at Quebec hospitals from April 1, 1989, to March 31, 2021.
“Second-trimester abortion carries a risk of live birth, especially at 20 to 24 weeks of gestation, although feticidal injection may protect against this outcome,” the study concluded.
The study found that babies aborted in Labor Induction Abortions had a 15.4 percent chance of being born alive, while those aborted in Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) Abortions had a 0.2 percent chance.
Additionally, babies in weeks 20-24 had a 21.7 percent chance of being born alive, compared to a 3.4 percent chance at 15-19 weeks and an 8.5 percent chance at 25-29 weeks.
The chance of a baby surviving an abortion also depends on the age of the mother. According to the study, babies with mothers under 25 years old had a 5.5 percent chance, while babies with mothers aged 25-30 had a 14.1 percent chance. Finally, babies with mothers 35 years or older had a 12.6 percent chance.
Perhaps most surprising is that the number of babies born alive has drastically increased since 1989 when there was only a 4.1 percent chance of live birth. The number rose to 10.2 percent in 2001-2010 before jumping to 20.8 percent between 2011 and 2021.
Sadly, the study also revealed that most babies born alive do not survive, with only 10 percent living longer than three hours.
Indeed, only 24.5 percent of the babies born alive were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while only 5.5 percent received palliative care.
The significant number of babies born alive after being aborted calls to mind those abortion activists who push for the legalization of infanticide.
Since Canada has no laws surrounding age for abortions, many have blurred the line between abortion and infanticide, arguing that the latter is merely a late term abortion.
Just last month, Liberal MP Dr. Hedy Fry bizarrely implied that ‘newborns’ face increased health risks as ‘extreme right’ governments restrict abortion, a practice whose sole purpose to kill said newborn babies.

As LifeSiteNews previously reported, in 2013, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government refused to investigate Statistics Canada data that reported that 491 babies were left to die after they were born alive following abortions.
“Abortion is legal in Canada,” he said at the time.
Similarly, in 2011, an Alberta judge suggested that infanticide is merely an extremely late term abortion while ruling in a case where a young mother strangled her newborn and tossed the corpse over the fence into the yard of one of her neighbors.
“While many Canadians undoubtedly view abortion as a less-than-ideal solution to unprotected sex and unwanted pregnancy, they generally understand, accept, and sympathize with the onerous demands pregnancy and childbirth exact from mothers, especially mothers without support,” the judge said.
Indeed, infanticide is often the next step for abortion activists who deny the dignity of human life, with many abortionists having been exposed for murdering babies born alive during abortion procedures.
