Finally, a real Debate about Alberta’s Future:

Should Alberta stay or go?

That was the central question of a vibrant debate that headlined our Rebel News LIVE! event in Red Deer on June 14. 

 

That event brought together powerful voices from every side of the issue and put their ideas to the test — live, on stage, in front of a passionate Alberta crowd.

 

To close out the day, political analyst David Knight Legg and constitutional lawyer Keith Wilson faced off in a no-holds-barred debate about Alberta's future as separatist sentiment continues to rise across the province.

 

It was a charged, thoughtful, and important exchange on what is best for Alberta and Canada. In Alberta, we can have these tough discussions without deciding the other person is evil or the enemy. It's the kind of thing you'll never see on the CBC. That's why we hosted it.

 

The debate was passionate. It was revealing. And it showed just how divided Albertans are over their place in Confederation.

What would happen if Alberta voted to separate from Canada?

As the threat of a separation referendum hangs over the province, Indigenous groups and constitutional experts are scoffing at the idea of Alberta actually leaving Canada.

 

There’s the possibility a 2026 vote could be in the cards — but even an unlikely “yes” at the ballot box wouldn’t trigger an exit. In fact, it would be just the beginning of a drawn-out political and legal battle.

That battle starts and ends with Indigenous groups in the province.

 

Treaty Chiefs held an emergency meeting on the subject Tuesday.

“This is treaty country, and any talk of separation is insanity,” Chief Troy Bossman Knowlton of the Piikani Nation said. “You can have all the referendums you want.”

 

More than 20 leaders stood united behind the notion — even threatening to stop any development and exploration on their lands until their voices are heard.

Knowlton’s message to Premier Danielle Smith? Stop flirting with the idea.

 

“We are not going anywhere, and if you feel that you have problems with First Nations, you could leave,” he said.

Chief concerns will need to be heard in any separation conversation. That’s because the entire province is made up of treaty territory or national parks.

 

The logistics of Quebec’s possible separation took decades to finalize, and since then, Canada has further acknowledged Indigenous people have the right to self-determination through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (UNDRIP).

 

“The treaties are binding legal promises between the Crown and Indigenous peoples, and so in order to get the consent from Indigenous peoples, they would have to agree to walk away from that relationship,” University of Calgary Law Professor Kathleen Mahoney said.

 

“It’s really, really complicated and it’s really not within the realm of possibility.”

And Mahoney points out that’s a conversation that can’t happen until the House of Commons has a say — and until at least two-thirds of the other provinces get on board, representing 50 per cent of the population.

 

“So those next steps probably involve some sort of dramatic constitutional change: either Alberta becoming a fully separate country or some new form of association,” University of Alberta Professor and constitutional expert Eric Adams said.

 

“There will be a long list of things that need to be negotiated, and as soon as you create that list, there would be another 50 things on it.”

Even if everything goes right for Alberta separatists and a vote is held and a constitutional amendment is granted, the process would take years.

 

And if a separating province can’t get recognition through Canada, it would need to get it through the international arena.

 

Considering other democratic countries are Canadian allies, Adams says it would get complicated quickly.

“The actual destination of Alberta’s new constitutional roles within North America, with its relationship with candidates and the United States … all of those things would have to be determined through long, slow, painful political negotiations.”

 

That’s not to mention court challenges over Alberta’s share of the national debt, currency, pensions, policing and new trade relationships, to mention a few.

 

The premier says she’ll respect treaty rights but won’t yet speculate on the feasibility of the entire venture.

“I don’t have answers to those questions, because until we see an actual active question and an active petition campaign, it really is just hypothetical,” Smith said.

 

“I guess I have to wait and see what kind of question comes forward from citizens.”

Trump and Hegseth GO NUCLEAR on Fake News Reporter for Insulting the Troops:

 

"You should be PROUD of those pilots, and you shouldn't be trying to demean them...you and the fake news are sick!!"

 

President Donald Trump alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth got into a tense exchange with a reporter Wednesday who questioned the efficacy of U.S. military strikes on Iran nuclear facilities and whether they actually “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear armaments as the president says.

“Oh here we go…” Trump sighed, annoyed. “It’s been obliterated Kelly!”

 

“Mr. President, you talked about expecting some on-the-ground assessments at Fordow and the other sites, is that Israeli and U.S. …” the reporter began to ask Trump.

“It’s been obliterated Kelly!” Trump interjected, tired of the mainstream media doubting the success of his strikes last weekend. “Totally obliterated!”

The reporter cited an intelligence report suggesting that Iran’s nuclear facilities were not definitively destroyed by the strikes.

 

“People like you picked it up and said ‘oh it’s not severe.’ No, the report was not a complete report,” the president fired back.

Trump, frustrated by the reporter, turned the podium over to Hegseth to respond to the question.

 

“There’s a reason the president calls out fake news for what it is!” Hegseth scolded the reporter. “The instinct of CNN, the instinct of the New York Times is to try to find a way to spin it for their own political reasons to try to hurt President Trump!”

 

The Defense Secretary stated that the leaked report contained "low-confidence" information, indicating its accuracy is uncertain.  “If you want to make an assessment of what happened at Fordow, you better get a big shovel!” Hegseth added.

China Develops Mosquito-Sized Drone for Covert Missions

  • ·       Researchers at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China's Hunan province have created a mosquito-sized drone designed for covert military operations.


  • ·       Details of the tiny drone and other robotic advancements were showcased in a report on CCTV 7, China Central Television's military channel. Liang Hexiang, an NUDT student, demonstrated the drone, highlighting its suitability for "information reconnaissance and special missions on the battlefield."


  • ·       The drone features two tiny, leaf-like wings on its stick-shaped body and three hair-thin "legs." The report also showed a four-winged prototype controlled by a smartphone, with two wings on each side moving horizontally.


  • ·       Developing these miniature drones presents significant manufacturing challenges due to the need to fit sensors, power devices, and control circuits into an extremely small space. This intricate work requires collaboration across various fields, including microscopic device engineering, materials science, and bionics.


    NATO Dials Down Anti-Russia Rhetoric to Accommodate President Trump

  • ·       NATO allies have agreed to tone down their criticism of Russia in a new, shorter summit communique, reportedly to accommodate President Donald Trump.


  • ·       The statement reaffirms NATO's commitment to supporting Ukraine with direct contributions to its defense and defense industry, which will count towards allies' defense spending calculations.


  • ·       The decision to omit specific mention of the war in Ukraine from the communique appears to be a concession made in exchange for President Trump's renewed commitment to NATO's Article 5 mutual defense clause.


  • ·       Prior to the summit, President Trump had expressed doubts about the US commitment to Article 5, causing concern among member states.

    President Trump Calls News Media “Scum”

  • ·       President Donald Trump vehemently criticized those who leaked intelligence suggesting the effectiveness of his "bunker busting" raids on Iran's nuclear facilities was exaggerated.


  • ·       Speaking at a NATO summit in The Hague, President Trump claimed news outlets publishing reports that the strikes only set back, rather than destroyed, Iran's nuclear program had "maligned" the pilots involved.


  • ·       The White House spent the day refuting leaks from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) indicating Iran's nuclear program was only delayed by a few months.


  • ·       President Trump referred to those who leaked or reported negatively on the strikes as "real scum" and stated the pilots should be celebrated as heroes.


  • ·       During the press conference, President Trump also personally attacked individual journalists, including CNN's Kaitlan Collins, calling their reporting "fake news."


  • ·       At one point, he became visibly agitated, leaving the stage mid-question and having Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth conclude his response.


    President Trump Claims Israeli Agents Entered Iranian Nuclear Sites After Bombing

  • ·       US President Donald Trump claimed that Israel sent agents to Iran's Fordo nuclear site after a recent US strike, asserting the attack was a "total obliteration."


  • ·       Speaking at the NATO summit in The Hague, President Trump stated that an Israeli report, which he understood was being compiled, would confirm the success of the Fordo bombing, suggesting Iran had no time to remove anything before the strike.


  • ·       This assertion directly contradicts a leaked US intelligence report from earlier in the week, which suggested the strikes did not destroy underground components and that much of Iran's enriched uranium might have been moved before the bombing. The White House has rejected this leaked report's findings and condemned the leak itself.


  • ·       Israeli officials, in response to President Trump's comments, told the Kan public broadcaster that they were unaware of any Israeli operation at the Fordo facility after the strike.


  • ·       President Trump warned he is willing to strike again if Iran attempts to revive its enrichment program.


    Mossad Chiefs Vow to Keep Spies in Iran for Years


  • ·       Mossad Chief David Barnea released a rare public video excerpt of an address to his agents involved in "sensational operations" against Iran on and after June 13.


  • ·       Barnea declared to his agents, "we will [continue to] be there, like we have been there," seemingly taunting Tehran.


  • ·       He described the Mossad's achievements against Iran as "unimaginable," with public information suggesting their involvement in assassinating top Iranian military chiefs and nuclear scientists, as well as blowing up nuclear, drone, and ballistic missile facilities.


  • ·       In a "stunning disclosure," the Mossad acknowledged having hundreds of agents inside Iran at the peak of these operations, which reportedly put the Iranian regime on the defensive from the beginning of the conflict.


    UK Will Need American Approval to Carry Nukes on F-35A Fighter Jets

  • ·       Britain will require permission from President Donald Trump, or the sitting US President, to deploy any tactical nuclear weapons from its newly acquired F-35A fighter jets.


  • ·       The UK has agreed to purchase 12 F-35A jets from the US, which will enable British aircraft to carry nuclear warheads for the first time since the Cold War.


  • ·       London’s Telegraph understands that Britain has no plans to develop its own sovereign nuclear bomb capability and will instead purchase B61-12 thermo bombs from the US.


  • ·       Under NATO's nuclear sharing arrangements, any US B-61 weapons carried by NATO allies remain under US custody.


  • ·       For a nuclear mission by a NATO country, approval is required from the alliance's Nuclear Planning Group, with final authorization from both the US President and the British Prime Minister.


  • ·       An RAF source questioned why the UK did not negotiate a deal that would grant it more independence in deploying its own airborne nuclear capability.


    ActBlue Officials Face House Investigation Over Fraud Allegations


  • ·       House Republicans have subpoenaed current and former ActBlue officials to testify about alleged "widespread" fraud on the Democratic fundraising platform. The subpoenas were issued by the GOP chairmen of the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Administration Committees.


  • ·       The individuals subpoenaed are an unnamed "current ActBlue senior workflow specialist" and Alyssa Twomey, former vice president of customer service.


  • ·       These subpoenas follow a parallel investigation authorized by President Trump's Department of Justice (DOJ). President Trump signed an executive order on April 24, mandating Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate "the unlawful use of online fundraising platforms to make 'straw' or 'dummy' contributions."


  • ·       The ActBlue employees' lawyer, Danny Onorato, has requested that the House committees withdraw their requests for transcribed interviews until the DOJ completes or clarifies its investigation.


  • ·       The DOJ probe, revealed in the subpoena letters, was initiated by President Trump's executive order which requires a report on the alleged ActBlue fraud within 180 days.


    33-Year-Old Socialist Defeats Andrew Cuomo for NYC Democratic Mayor Nomination

  • ·       Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate, achieved an unexpected victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary.


  • ·       Mamdani, a 33-year-old Queens assemblyman, declared, "Tonight we made history," after securing a significant 7-point lead.


  • ·       This win marks a surprising political comeback attempt for Cuomo, 67, who had resigned from his governorship in 2021. Cuomo conceded the race, acknowledging Mamdani's victory.


  • ·       Unofficial results from the Board of Elections for the first round of ranked-choice voting showed Mamdani with 43.51% of the votes (approximately 432,000), followed by Cuomo with 36.42% (approximately 362,000), and City Comptroller Brad Lander with 11.31%.

OPINION

Tucker Carlson goes Off-the-Rails......

As you know I have been a huge Tucker Carlson fan.  But, recently, he has begun to leave me a bit cold.  Most recently with his accusation that Mark Levin is a “forever war” type.  I don’t agree.

So, I would start to watch the Carlson show and more often than not lately, I will turn it off.  The latest one I started to watch is an interview with former FNC reporter Clayton Morris.  Morris left FNC for his own reasons and he had nothing bad to say about any of the people at Fox.  However, he and Carlson began to seriously criticize the way Fox presents NEWS. 


According to them, it is all driven by some sort of evil politics on the part of management and ownership.  I began to get really upset with their IGNORANCE.  While they were blaming Fox for “manipulating news” for their own nefarious reasons (for example by moving it forward from segment to segment) Tucker and Clayton considered that this was somehow a bad thing.  FOX was “pushing management’s” evil points of view.

 

What garbage.

Remember, above all, I am a radio programmer with a fair amount of talent.  Because of my knowledge, I also understand the basic TV programming concepts used on FNC.  Whoever laid out the format was a genius in my opinion.  Probably Roger Ailes; but I don’t know that for sure.  Anyway, regardless of whoever may have designed the format, they got it right from the very beginning. 


I won’t bore you with the details of how and why it works (unless you ask me); just suffice to say that the way they present the news and how often it is repeated and the way it is repeated is 100% driven by GREAT PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS designed to gain and hold viewers and has absolutely nothing, in my opinion, to do with content by design.  I’m talking about program formatting here.

 

As for Content, the fact it leans heavily toward the right is also a deliberate choice in order to reach the most viewers.  Just the same as the Dems have super low ratings, most of the other NEWS outlets also have super low ratings….and FOR THE VERY SAME REASONS….content and presentation.

 

I tried to explain to my brother-in-law one time why Rush Limbaugh was so successful and he cut me off with an insult.  He didn’t want to hear baby steps and what he thought was condescending information.  Boy was he wrong.  He didn’t learn anything either; but, then he is also a Dem.

 

FNC does everything RIGHT (in every sense of the word).  This explains why even when they loose very popular commentators that they go on and continue to have super high ratings.  For one example, witness the loss of Bill O’Reilly.  The word was FNC had lost their minds and were soon going to take a dump in the ratings.  But, along comes Jesse Waters and guess what?  They are still ON TOP.

 

Back in 1978, I lost my entire staff – both on and off air - in one afternoon.  They walked out on the station at 4pm in protest and stood outside the studio looking in from the other side of the pic.  They were mad at me or, if you will, one of the women I had employed was unhappy with me for personal reasons. 


This walk out COMPLETE WITH VERY NEGATIVE PRESS FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER was designed to ruin WXIL and me.  Immediately, I had a temporary staff and within two weeks I had an all new fulltime staff and guess what?  THE RATINGS WENT UP!  I was supposed to coax the original staff back out of necessity.  THAT WAS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. 

 

It was the format and management that made it work and not the stand alone DJs and News people.  Lesson learned?  Ask them.  I was content; although I hated that it happened.  Some folks were led down a garden path and some went hungry.    This included the all-time most famous DJ at WXIL, Uncle Dougger.  But, even without Doug, THE RATINGS GREW MIGHTELY. 


I hired Douger back years later at WYLi because he was repentant.  We are friends to this day.  To this day I am sorry because I liked the misguided staff.  But, I could not allow myself to be coerced or threatened.  The old staff lost and they brought it on themselves.  The news staff was better in many ways because they had more than just talent.

 

So,  Tucker is wrong in my opinion and is completely missing the real point in order to support his misguided political views.  I guess when all is said and done, Tucker Carlson is really only a JOCK (DJ) at heart.  Too bad….he had my attention for a while.
