Senate confirms Sen. Markwayne Mullin as DHS Secretary in 54-45 vote, replacing Kristi Noem

Sen. Markwayne Mullin was confirmed Monday night as the next Secretary of Homeland Security in a 54-45 vote, with Sen. Rand Paul as the only Republican to oppose his confirmation while Sens. John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich crossed party lines to vote in favor. Mullin’s confirmation comes after President Trump announced in early March that he had picked Mullin to replace Kristi Noem, who will “be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas.”


·        Why it matters: Trump praised Mullin, who served “10 years in the United States House of Representatives, and 3 in the Senate,” saying he has done “a tremendous job.” The confirmation comes amid ongoing tensions between Mullin and Paul, who grilled Mullin during his confirmation hearing for appearing to “justify” the 2017 assault that left Paul with six broken ribs.

Savannah Guthrie bypasses national media, targets Tucson directly in calculated push to find missing mother

Seven weeks after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home near Tucson, her family broke a long public silence with a move a former FBI agent calls anything but accidental. They skipped the national networks and went straight to a local Arizona television station, betting that the person who holds the answer lives in the neighborhood.


The family issued its statement to KVOA, a hyper-local station in Tucson, not to NBC or any of the platforms the "Today" show host could have commanded with a phone call. Former FBI Agent Jason Pack told Page Six that the choice was "deliberate."

That word matters. It tells you the Guthrie family is not just grieving. They are working the case themselves, because authorities have all but disappeared from public view.


A family fills the vacuum

Law enforcement has not held a press conference in over a month. It had been nearly three weeks since the family itself made any public appeal before Saturday night, Pack said. When investigators go quiet and the media cycle moves on, tip volume drops. That is the nature of it. And when tips dry up, a case that should be solvable starts to feel like it isn't.


Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on Feb. 1 after she failed to attend a virtual church service. Authorities believe she was abducted in her sleep and "harmed" in the process. A trail of her blood was found outside her home. Surveillance images released on Feb. 10 showed a masked individual breaking into her home wearing gloves and carrying a backpack.


No suspects have been arrested. A number of people have been questioned, but the investigation remains open with no public resolution in sight, a grim reality that has persisted since the earliest weeks of the case.

The Washington Examiner reported that authorities believe the 84-year-old was kidnapped, abducted, or otherwise taken against her will. The FBI released surveillance video of a masked man outside Nancy Guthrie's front door on the night she vanished. The family is offering a $1 million reward for information.

And yet, silence from the agencies that should be driving this case forward.


The local play

Pack laid out the logic behind the family's decision to go local. He said the statement was "aimed directly at residents of Tucson and southern Arizona."

"The family chose a local television station, not a national platform. That is not an accident. NBC and its platforms would likely have aired it if asked. They targeted their own neighborhood. That tells you they believe someone local has information, or more likely, someone local has not checked their cameras yet because they assumed somebody else already did."


The family's own words reinforced that theory. In their statement to KVOA, the Guthries said they "continue to believe it is Tucsonans, and the greater southern Arizona community, that hold the key to finding resolution in this case."

"Someone knows something. It's possible a member of this community has information that they do not even realize is significant."


They asked residents to search their memories around three specific windows: January 31, the early morning hours of February 1, and the late evening of January 11. That last date is notable. The family statement did not explain its significance, and no official agency has publicly clarified what may have happened that night. But the family clearly believes it matters.


The plea was specific and practical: consult camera footage, journal notes, text messages, observations, or conversations that might hold significance in hindsight. "No detail is too small. It may be the key," the family said.


Behind the scenes, or behind closed doors?

Pack pushed back on the assumption that investigative silence means the case has "stalled." He argued that weeks of search warrant returns, subpoena responses, lab work, and digital forensics are likely being processed right now.


"The public does not see that work. It happens behind closed doors, and it takes time."

He also noted that investigators are said to be pursuing genetic genealogy options and checking commercial DNA databases beyond the national system. That process is slow, he acknowledged, but "it has also broken cases far colder than this one."


That is a generous reading of the situation. The public record tells a less encouraging story. Just The News reported that DNA found on a glove near Nancy Guthrie's home turned out to belong to a restaurant worker across the street, a dead end. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told Fox News, "We believed wholeheartedly that those gloves belonged to a restaurant and guess what? The owner of the glove, we found working at a restaurant across the street. It has nothing to do with the case."


The suspect seen on surveillance footage has been described as approximately 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 with an average build, wearing a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. That description has been public for weeks. No arrest has followed.


Newsmax reported that FBI agents have turned their attention to a vacant home near Nancy Guthrie's property, a house that was vacated shortly before she disappeared. A retired lieutenant told NewsNation that a location like a vacant home, "out of the prying eye of the neighborhood, could also be a location to set up surveillance equipment without anyone knowing." That lead, if it proves substantive, would suggest a level of planning that makes the lack of an arrest even more troubling.


A sheriff under fire

Sheriff Nanos has faced mounting criticism over his department's handling of the investigation. Fox News reported that Nanos said he stands by the investigation and does not regret early decisions, including questions about whether the crime scene was released too soon. Authorities have said they are relying heavily on cellphone data, surveillance video, and forensic analysis.


The community has mobilized, tips, footage reviews, ribbons, and memorials have kept the pressure visible on the ground in Tucson. But public frustration has grown sharp enough that a recall effort has been launched against the sheriff over what critics call a botched investigation.


Early in the case, Breitbart reported that Pima County authorities escalated the disappearance from a missing-person search to a criminal investigation after processing Nancy Guthrie's residence as a crime scene. Nanos said at the time that Guthrie does not have cognitive problems and that investigators believe she did not simply wander away. "We know she didn't just walk out of there," the sheriff said.


That was nearly two months ago. Since then, the FBI has pulled new surveillance images from the property without naming a suspect, and the investigation appears to have shifted toward a longer-term posture, with key leads stalling and talk of a long-term task force.


Ring cameras and raw grief

Pack's sharpest point was aimed at the task force itself. He urged agents and deputies to go back to residents, collect footage directly, and review it themselves, even when a homeowner says there is nothing on it.

"The resident does not know what nothing looks like to a trained investigator. Sometimes the most important frame in an investigation is the one the homeowner already dismissed."


He put it bluntly: "If you can't solve a seven-week-old kidnapping with DNA, thousands of hours of video, a million-dollar reward, and the full weight of the FBI, then the answer is probably sitting in somebody's Ring camera footage they haven't looked at yet."

The family's statement ended with words that carried less strategy and more anguish.

"We miss our mom with every breath and we cannot be in peace until she is home. We cannot grieve; we can only ache and wonder. Our focus is solely on finding her and bringing her home. We want to celebrate her beautiful and courageous life. But we cannot do that until she is brought to a final place of rest."


That is a family forced to do two things at once: mourn a mother they cannot bury and investigate a crime that authorities have gone quiet on. They should not have to do either job alone.

When law enforcement goes dark, somebody has to turn the lights back on. The Guthrie family just did it themselves. That is not how the system is supposed to work.
