There are many examples of betrayal by friends in the Bible. Cain betrayed his brother Abel; Joseph was betrayed by his own brothers; Jacob betrayed his brother Esau. And David recounted numerous instances of his friends turning against him (Psalm 31:11; 38:11; 41:9; 55:12-13). It pays to choose friends wisely, though even a wise choice doesn’t guarantee loyalty. True friends are made for adversity (Proverbs 17:17), and there are friends who can be more loyal than family (Proverbs 18:24). One way to cultivate true friendships is by being the kind of friend you desire to have (Proverbs 18:24).Give thanks today that Jesus is your truest friend (John 15:14-15).What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!Joseph M. CANADIAN:

Eligible Canadians will receive a one-time GST/HST credit top-up payment on June 5, 2026, as part of the transition to the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which replaces the GST/HST credit starting in July 2026. The payment is 50% of the total annual GST/HST credit amount for the period from July 2025 to June 2026, providing immediate support to help manage day-to-day essential costs.

The Liberal government's groceries benefit and one-time GST top-up announced in January will begin landing in Canadians' bank accounts in June and July.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which he said will boost what families and individuals receive through their GST rebate over the next five years.


The GST rebate is a tax-free payment targeted to low- and modest-income Canadians. Beginning in July, that quarterly rebate will increase by 25 per cent — and will stay at that higher level for the next five years.


The ongoing 25 per cent boost means a family of four that qualified for a maximum benefit of about $1,100 will get up to $1,400 annually going forward, while an individual that qualified for a maximum of around $540 will get about $700 a year instead.

Beginning in July, the GST rebate will be renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and should appear that way on bank statements.


Another part of the government's affordability announcement in January is the Liberal government's promise it would also give Canadians a one-time 50 per cent top-up to the GST rebate they received from July 2025 to June 2026.


That one-time top up will arrive on June 5.

The one-time boost will raise the $1,100 maximum a family of four received from July of last year until June of this year to $1,890 and increases the $540 an individual got to $950.


“We are offering this one-time payment to help with affordability and relieve some of that pressure for those who need it most,” Wayne Long, the secretary of state for the Canada Revenue Agency, said in a statement on Friday.


Who is eligible for the GST rebate

The income cutoff rate varies from year to year, depending on inflation, but in order to be eligible at all, you must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and at least 19 years old.

For the 2024 tax year, which is what current payouts are based on, a single person with no kids who has an adjusted net income (income minus eligible deductions) of $56,181 or less will receive the GST rebate.


A married or common-law couple with two kids can receive the rebate if their family income is $66,841 or less.

The government estimates some 12 million people receive the GST rebate.

Rep. Tom Emmer calls Ilhan Omar a 'complete fraud' over Financial Disclosure Discrepancy

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer said Rep. Ilhan Omar "does not deserve to be in Congress" after a massive gap surfaced between her original financial disclosure, which listed assets as high as $30 million, and an amended filing that put the figure between $18,004 and $95,000.


Emmer, a fellow Minnesota Republican, made the remarks Saturday on Fox News' "The Big Weekend Show," where he zeroed in on the controversy surrounding Omar's revised congressional filings and her broader resistance to fraud investigations. The next day, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer piled on, saying the House Ethics Committee now has "a lot of questions" for the Democrat from Minneapolis.


The gap between those two numbers is not a rounding error. Omar's earlier disclosure estimated holdings between $6 million and $30 million. The amended version, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, slashed that range to between $18,004 and $95,000 for Omar and her husband. Her office blamed a "major accounting error" and insisted the correction was filed promptly.


Emmer: 'She should be held accountable to the fullest extent'

Emmer did not mince words. On Saturday he told Fox News viewers that Omar and her accountant both deserved to lose their positions:

"Not only should her accountant be fired, but that girl should be fired and she does not deserve to be in Congress."


He went further, tying the disclosure mess to broader scrutiny of Omar's posture toward fraud investigations. Omar has drawn Republican criticism for her public comments questioning federal crackdowns on fraud, remarks that have only sharpened the focus on her own financial paperwork.


Emmer framed the stakes plainly, as Fox News reported:

"Quite frankly, if she is discovered to be involved in any of this fraud personally, that she benefited from it, even by her actions of promoting it and trying to resist investigations, she should be held accountable to the fullest extent."


The controversy is not limited to balance sheets. Omar has also faced questions about an earlier round of disclosure irregularities that first put her finances under a spotlight.


Comer pushes for Ethics Committee investigation

Comer, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the House Oversight Committee, appeared Sunday on "Fox & Friends Weekend" and explained why he has been pressing the Ethics Committee rather than handling the matter through his own panel. He said Omar is "a person of interest" in what he described as Somali fraud, a reference to broader federal investigations.


"We're not supposed to do that [investigate it] on the Oversight Committee, but because she's a person of interest in the [Somali fraud], I've been trying to get that."

Comer added that the revised financial disclosure only strengthens the case for formal scrutiny:


"Now that this financial disclosure form has been changed, I think the Ethics Committee has a lot of questions for her, and we're going to continue to push them to make sure that she has to answer them."


A congressional watchdog had already flagged the original filing, which listed Omar's assets as high as $30 million, a figure that prompted immediate questions about how a member of Congress who entered office without significant reported wealth could have accumulated such holdings.


Separately, Sen. Joni Ernst has accused Omar of steering a $1 million earmark to a Somali restaurant allegedly posing as a rehabilitation clinic, adding another layer to the pattern of financial questions surrounding the congresswoman.

Omar's office: 'She is not a millionaire'


Omar spokesperson Jacklyn Rogers told The Wall Street Journal that the corrected filing vindicates the congresswoman. Rogers said the amended disclosure "confirms what we've said all along: The congresswoman is not a millionaire." She added that the correction was made "as soon as the discrepancy was identified."


Omar's office attributed the original inflated figures to a major accounting error but did not publicly detail the nature of the mistake. Fox News Digital said it reached out to Omar's office for additional comment and did not hear back.


The "accounting error" explanation raises its own questions. Financial disclosures are legal documents. Members of Congress sign them under penalty of law. An error that overstates your net worth by as much as $29.9 million is not a misplaced decimal, it is a chasm that demands a credible explanation, and Omar has not provided one.


A widening pattern of controversy

The financial disclosure fight is only one front. Emmer has also formally asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate Omar over a separate matter: a viral Somali-language speech that critics said amounted to a pledge to protect Somalia's interests from inside the U.S. government. The Washington Examiner reported that Emmer argued Omar's alleged remarks could violate House Rule XXIII, clause 1, which requires members to behave in a manner that reflects creditably on the House.


Omar disputed the translation cited by her critics and reposted an alternative version she said more accurately portrayed her comments as defending Somalia's territorial interests rather than pledging disloyalty to the United States. Emmer was unconvinced.

"No sitting member of Congress should be able to blatantly spew anti-American rhetoric and get away with it," Emmer said in his letter to the Ethics Committee, the Washington Examiner reported.


The fraud-related accusations have also drawn international attention. Somaliland officials have publicly said they would welcome Omar's extradition after Vice President JD Vance leveled fraud accusations against the congresswoman.


Meanwhile, the political ground beneath Omar may be shifting at home. A former ICE attorney who clashed with federal officials in court has launched a Democratic primary challenge against her, a sign that the accumulating controversies are creating openings even within her own party.


What remains unanswered

Several basic questions still hang over this story. Omar's office has not explained what specific accounting error produced a disclosure that overstated her assets by millions of dollars. The agency or office responsible for reviewing the filing has not publicly weighed in. And Omar herself has not spoken directly to the discrepancy, at least not in any forum where reporters have been able to press her on the details.


Fox News Digital's unanswered request for comment underscores the silence. When your financial paperwork swings from $30 million to $95,000 and your explanation is a two-sentence statement from a spokesperson, the public is entitled to skepticism.

Congressional financial disclosures exist for a reason.


They let voters know whether their representatives have conflicts of interest, hidden wealth, or financial entanglements that might color their votes. A filing that misses the mark by tens of millions of dollars, in either direction, defeats the entire purpose of the requirement.


If the error was innocent, a full accounting should be simple. If it wasn't, the Ethics Committee owes the public more than silence.
