 Bill C-9 against quoting Bible verses could turn Canada into police state: pro-freedom group

A Liberal Party censorship bill that could remove certain protections for sincerely held religious beliefs, particularly on LGBT issues, has led to backlash from Canadians of many faiths.

OTTAWA, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) — A Canadian constitutional freedom group warned that the imminent passage of a bill that threatens religious expression when it comes to quoting from certain Bible passages after it becomes law will turn Canada into a “police” state.


The Democracy Fund (TDF) alerted Canadians that Bill C-9, or the “Combatting Hate Act,” will expand the “legal definition of hatred and removes key free expression safeguards in the Criminal Code.”

“TDF will continue to oppose the Bill and all attempts by the government to censor Canadians,” the group warned.


As reported by LifeSiteNews, all debate on Bill C-9, a bill that could open the door to the criminalization of religious expression and belief when quoting certain parts of the Bible, was stopped last week.

Bill C-9 passed the committee phase last Friday and will soon pass third reading in the House of Commons.


TDF was invited to testify before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights regarding Bill C-9. In a brief it filed, the TDF outlined its reasons for opposing the bill.

“Ironically, the government has moved to end debate on issues of public concern for a bill that would end debate on issues of public concern. The Bill empowers prosecutors to bring charges based on the merest suggestion that the impugned conduct is motivated by an ill-defined concept of ‘hatred,’ massively increasing potential jail time and legal jeopardy for defendants,” the TDF noted.


“In our experience, these types of offences tend to be laid against marginalized and working-class people rather than powerful elites and political insiders. However, all Canadians can expect greater digital censorship and increased online police surveillance if the Bill becomes law. We only have to look at the UK example, where police make approximately 12,000 annual arrests for online ‘hate incidents’ under similar legislation.’”


Bill C-9 is a Liberal Party censorship bill that has attracted massive backlash from religious Canadians of many faiths. Once it becomes law, certain protections for sincerely held religious beliefs, particularly regarding LGBT issues, could be removed.

In comments to LifeSiteNews, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) campaigns manager David Cooke warned that Bill C-9 would result in the “prosecution of Canadian Christians” when quoting the Bible on issues of life and family.


The federal government, under Prime Minister Mark Carney, recently passed an amendment to the bill removing a religious exemption, prompting condemnation from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, who issued an open letter calling for its removal.


As reported by LifeSiteNews, Bill C-9 has been blasted by constitutional experts as allowing empowered police and the government to go after those it deems to have violated a person’s “feelings” in a “hateful” way. The bill was introduced by Justice Minister Sean Fraser last year.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has been completely silent on these hate marches, and yet, at the same time, his government is pushing through censorship laws to crack down on alleged “hate symbols” online. Why not crack down on the real hate and intimidation of Jewish Canadians in Jewish neighbourhoods in Toronto?

TRUMP: 

Joe Kent resigns as counter-terrorism director, breaks with White House over Iran strikes

Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, announced his resignation Tuesday, declaring he "cannot in good conscience" support the administration's military campaign in Iran. The 45-year-old combat veteran and former CIA operative posted his statement on social media, making him the highest-profile national security official to break with the White House since strikes began on February 28.


Kent's central claim is blunt:

Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.

President Trump fired back quickly, calling Kent "weak on security" and insisting that "Iran was a tremendous threat." He dismissed the resignation without sentimentality.

We don't want those people. They're not smart people, or they're not savvy people.


A complicated messenger

Kent's military credentials are not in dispute, AP News reported. He served 11 deployments, lost his wife in Syria in 2019, and built a public profile criticizing the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021. Senator Tom Cotton, the GOP chair of the Intelligence Committee, praised Kent during his confirmation process as someone who "dedicated his career to fighting terrorism and keeping Americans safe." The Senate confirmed him last July on a 52-44 vote.


But Kent also carries baggage that makes him a difficult figure to rally behind. During his 2022 congressional campaign, he paid a member of the Proud Boys, Graham Jorgensen, for consulting work. He worked with Joey Gibson, founder of Patriot Prayer. And he participated in a call that included Nick Fuentes, the right-wing influencer who once said "Hitler was awesome, Hitler was right."


None of that disqualifies his intelligence assessment on its own merits. But it does explain why his resignation lands awkwardly for everyone. The right cannot fully embrace him. The left cannot fully claim him. And the story becomes about Kent the character rather than Kent the argument.


The substance underneath the spectacle

Strip away the personality, and there is a real policy question here that deserves serious treatment: Was the intelligence on Iran sufficient to justify strikes?

House Speaker Mike Johnson says yes, emphatically. Johnson told reporters he received full briefings and understood the threat clearly:


I got all the briefings. We all understood that there was clearly an imminent threat that Iran was very close to the enrichment of nuclear capability and they were building missiles at a pace no one in the region could keep up with.

Johnson went further, warning that without action, "we would have mass casualties of Americans, service members and others, and our installation would have been dramatically damaged."


That is a specific, concrete claim. It is also a claim that will face scrutiny as CIA Director John Ratcliffe and FBI Director Kash Patel prepare to testify before lawmakers on threats facing the United States. If the intelligence supports what Johnson describes, Kent's resignation becomes a footnote. If it doesn't, the questions get louder.


The Democratic angle

Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, wasted no time aligning himself with Kent's conclusion, if not his worldview:

I strongly disagree with many of the positions he has espoused over the years, particularly those that risk politicizing our intelligence community.

But, Warner added, "on this point, he is right: There was no credible evidence of an imminent threat from Iran that would justify rushing the United States into another war of choice in the Middle East."


This is a familiar move. Democrats who spent years calling figures like Kent dangerous suddenly discover common ground the moment it serves an anti-administration narrative. Warner's caveat about "politicizing our intelligence community" is rich coming from a party that weaponized intelligence agencies against a sitting president for the better part of a decade. The alliance of convenience tells you more about Warner's motives than Kent's credibility.


The real conservative tension

What makes this story uncomfortable is that it touches a genuine fault line on the right, one that predates Kent and will outlast him. The conservative movement contains both Reagan-era internationalists who view Iranian nuclear ambitions as an existential threat requiring decisive action and a post-Iraq populist wing deeply skeptical of Middle Eastern military engagement.


Kent gave voice to the latter camp in stark terms:

It speaks to our hubris. For us not to have learned from all this just shows that there are people making money and making their careers at the other end of it. They've been doing it on the backs and dead bodies of U.S. soldiers.

That sentiment resonates with millions of conservative voters who watched two decades of nation-building produce body bags and little else. It also risks becoming a reflex that treats every use of military force as automatically illegitimate, which is its own form of strategic paralysis.


Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has not responded to questions about Kent's resignation, once warned that "an all out war with Iran would make the wars that we've seen in Iraq and Afghanistan look like a picnic." Her silence now is conspicuous. She sits at the center of the intelligence apparatus and has, at least historically, shared Kent's skepticism. Whether she still does from inside the administration remains an open question.


What comes next

Reports indicate that an elementary school strike in Iran killed more than 165 people. China Halting Fertilizer Exports

The Chinese government has asked exporters to halt outbound shipments of nitrogen-potassium fertilizer blends.


This was a sudden move, today, done without explanation - yet.

It will IMMEDIATELY affect farmers and food production, worldwide.

People familiar with the situation said the latest directives have effectively paused overseas shipments of most fertilizer types, including compound varieties that had still been moving abroad after China loosened some urea limits last year.


One key exception is ammonium sulfate, which accounted for about half of the country's fertilizer shipments last year and remains unaffected for now.

The National Development and Reform Commission, the General Administration of Customs and the Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to requests for comment.


The tightening comes as the Middle East conflict disrupts fertilizer production and trade flows from a major global hub, driving prices higher worldwide. In China, spot prices for urea — the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer — have climbed nearly 40% since US-Israeli attacks in Iran began, according to Green Markets data.


Farmers from the US to Asia and Europe have been moving to secure supplies, while Indian officials recently approached China to request some urea cargoes as the war curbs gas supplies and pressures domestic production.

“And so we’ve been all over the fertilizer problem. And I’m not saying that we can eliminate what disruption there is so far, but we can minimize it for sure.”
