PM Carney acknowledges auto industry ‘challenges’ after Honda reportedly suspends $15B EV plant
Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that the Canadian auto industry is facing “challenges” due to U.S. tariffs. His comments come amid reporting from a Japanese outlet that Honda is indefinitely suspending plans to build a $15-billion electric vehicle plant in Ontario.
“There are challenges with the U.S. tariffs, unjustified tariffs in the auto sector,” Carney said to reporters on Wednesday morning in Ottawa. “We’ll continue to work with companies in the sector, helping them reposition, reinvest, supporting workers there. We’ll continue to do what’s necessary, including getting the right deal in Canada’s interest.”
Carney did not mention Honda specifically.
On Tuesday, Nikkei Asia reported that slow U.S. demand is pushing the Japanese automaker “to put hybrids at the centre of its North American strategy.”
In May 2025, Honda announced it would delay the project for two years, with Honda chief executive Toshihiro Mibe saying the company would examine where the EV market is before deciding whether to move forward with the project.
Speaking to CTV’s Your Morning on Wednesday, Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne would not confirm the report, but said “there seems to be a delay” with the transition to electric vehicles around the world.
“The word is ‘hold.’ It’s not unique to Canada. ... If you look at what’s happening in Europe, what’s happening also in the United States,” Champagne said. “It’s just that the market has been shifting. If you ask my opinion, it’s been shifting a bit because of policies south of the border.”
In a statement to CTV News, Industry Minister Melanie Joly’s office said the global automotive sector is experiencing “significant change.”
“American tariffs and changes to U.S. domestic policies are creating real pressures for automakers, prompting some to delay or scale back investments in electric vehicle and battery projects,” the statement reads.
“Canada will continue to support and protect existing automotive facilities by mitigating tariff pressures and sustaining the production of fuel-efficient vehicles, while positioning the sector for long-term growth, resilience and global competitiveness,” Joly’s office added.
Honda Canada, meanwhile, told CTV News the company has “nothing to report at this time.”
U.S. market access is critical for Japanese investment
In an interview with CTV’s Question Period back in February, Japan’s Ambassador to Canada Kanji Yamanouchi said continued access to the U.S. market, as provided for under Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), is essential for current and potential increased Japanese investment in auto manufacturing in Canada.
“All those cars made in Canada, of course sold in Canada, but at the same time, exported to the U.S. market,” Yamanouchi said at the time. “(For) private companies, that means they have to calculate to increase profit. So, CUSMA is a very important part of the calculation.”
The Honda plant was slated to begin operating as early as 2028.

Subject: Lionhearts et al
Thanks Stanislav, it's called Lionhearts. This is what I read in the Free Press in Dec.
I dismissed the idea of contacting Lionhearts because all those mutual aid communities we deal with have one primary purpose which is to become independent and self-sufficient when the SHTF. Lionhearts gets stuff primarily from chainstores like Costco and Amazon, which are most vulnerable if supply lines fail due to rising price of oil, terrorist attacks or space storms which can fry electrical systems, and also vulnerable to banking problems such as inflation or the need for ID cards which could lead to unwanted government controls.
On the other hand, a food operation like Harvest Hands in St. Thomas works primarily with local farmers and local canners/bottlers to take excess foods direct to needy people via volunteer drivers. London and area Mutual Aid Communities need to help these long-term sources of food. In fact some of us are working on ways to help them grow food even when fertilizer and sterile seeds are no longer available due to interruptions in the international system.
We hope that the KW Mennonite farmers who sell direct to the public through Bailey's would continue to sell to us if food ran low or became too expensive in the grocery store chains. Especially because Bailey's is owned by Rob P. founding partner in OUR Community Dollars, the great alternative to fiat currency.
Having said this, I would still approve of people coming alongside Lionhearts for now in order to help the hungry and the projects Lionhearts support. Just look at their Programs on their Kingston website! But I just don't see Lionhearts as helpful to members of Mutual Aid Communities in achieving their long-range goals of independence from conflicts and corruption in governments which have become increasing oppressive and out-of-control.

Dumb Blondes and Cunning Witches
This could get me into trouble, but I must show you the graph because it explains from where we get such uncouth phrases as "dumb blondes" and "cunning witches". It may also help you to not stereotype women. They are more diverse than we men.
Hedges & Nowell studied this in great detail and found that in the upper 5%, men outnumbered women 2.5:1. in the top 0.1%, it’s over 6:1 and in the very top of male slanted skills like math it’s over 7:1. and those are the kinds of folks that wind up teaching science at harvard so seeing s 6-7:1 slant in faculty gender would likely be a sign of true gender blindness. it could be even higher if the effects of ability are further magnified by variation in interest/preference.
If we’re all born with equal potential, then any variance in outcome is proof of discrimination.
And why are we so determined to believe this? Because that belief allows us to intervene and claim justification for demanding preferencing and for accusing others of privilege and prejudice. because it means that if we don’t win, it’s your fault.
