Conservative MP in Kitchener, Ont., says Liberals tried to convince her to cross the floor

MP Kelly DeRidder described details of a phone call she received from Liberals in social post

An Ontario Conservative MP says she will not be crossing the floor anytime soon, despite an attempt from the Liberal Party to poach her.

Kitchener Centre MP Kelly DeRidder says she got a phone call from the Liberal Party, trying to convince her that switching sides would give her a better chance at winning the next election.


She disagrees.

"There needs to be transparency and accountability in government and that's just the bottom line and it's being slowly eroded away and the trust in our institutions is going to be gone," DeRidder told CBC News in an interview after posting about the experience in a video on Facebook.

The Liberals currently hold a majority of seats in the House of Commons, after multiple Conservative MPs crossed the floor over the last several months.


During a press conference earlier this month, shortly after Marilyn Gladu became the latest MP to defect from the Conservatives, Prime Minister Mark Carney said the recent floor-crossers had brought "a series of perspectives and expertise that is aiding … the government and the country at a crucial time."

DeRidder says they tried to poach her too, but she said no.


"They said we've noticed what you're doing in committee and you're doing really great work. And especially your interest in AI, in digital policy, we think there would be a really good spot for you on our team here," DeRidder told CBC News.

"I said, well, thank you for the flattery and pumping my tires a little, but my answer is still no."


DeRidder said she was told it would be difficult for a Conservative to win in that riding in the next election because Green supporters would back the Liberal candidate.

"It was a conversation that started with, 'Well, we're gonna put someone in Kitchener Centre that is gonna be supported by both the Liberals and the Greens, so you don't really stand a chance in the next election. You might as well come over to our side.'"

CBC News has reached out to the Liberal Party for comment.


The Green Party's Mike Morrice was the incumbent in the April 2025 federal election, but lost the seat to DeRidder.

DeRidder won with 20,217 votes, which was 358 more than Morrice, who had 19,859. Liberal candidate Brian Adeba came in third with 17,298 votes. It was one of three local seats the Conservatives flipped in that election. The other two were Cambridge and Kitchener South-Hespeler.

Green Party leader responds

Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada, told CBC News "Green voters would never support anyone but Mike Morrice to be their MP."

Morrice told CBC News he's focused on the next election.

"If I learned anything from last time, it's that we just need to work that much harder and engage with more folks," he said.


"I've been the nominated candidate with the Greens in Kitchener Centre as of earlier in the fall, have been canvassing regularly since that point and haven't had any contact from the Liberals or the Conservatives."


Pros and cons of speaking out

DeRidder explained why it felt important for her to be transparent about the call and her refusal.

"Personally, I was starting to get frustrated with the blame being placed on the Conservative Party and our leader. What is happening here is active recruitment to the other side and someone needed to tell that story," she said. "That someone, I guess, has got to be me."


Andrea Perrella is an associate professor of political science at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. He says it's not unusual for parties to try and recruit members from across the floor.


"It does occur, but it is unusual for the recipient of such invitations to go out in public and to basically blow the whistle on it. It can tarnish or strain the relationship," he said.

"There is a certain degree of goodwill that you want to maintain with members from different parties. Despite what the perception that we get from the media, they don't hate each other. They work together."


Perrella says there may be benefits to speaking out as well.

"If there's any risk to her viability as a candidate, then this basically tells her voters, 'You stand with me and I will stand with you' ... this shores up her reputation as a loyal Conservative," he said.


He says that reputation may help her during the next election, especially within the Kitchener Centre riding, which has increasingly divided voters.

"[Kitchener Centre] can flip from one party to the next to the next. We have seen a variety of parties representing that riding and at the provincial level as well. It is a riding that is not secure for any party," Perrella said.

"If she has a base, a Conservative base, in Kitchener Centre, then this pronouncement may help her keep those votes."


Corrections

In fact, DeRidder said she was told the candidate would have support from Green Party voters, not the party itself.

DeSantis Has Democrats Panicking Over Florida Redistricting and They Should Be

Hakeem Jeffries warned Florida Republicans to 'f around and find out' as Democrats vow lawsuits against any new map

 

Governor Ron DeSantis has called a special session to redraw Florida’s congressional districts, a move Democrats are sharply criticizing as the national fight over House control intensifies. With Republicans holding a narrow majority, the outcome in Florida could carry major consequences for Trump’s legislative agenda.


Why it matters: Redistricting is no longer a background process. It has become one of the most important battles over political power in Washington.


Is Florida simply playing the same hardball game other states already have?

All eyes are on Florida this week, as it is likely the final battleground in the high-stakes fight between President Donald Trump and Republicans versus Democrats over congressional redistricting.


A special session of the Florida legislature, called earlier this year by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to redraw the right-leaning state's U.S. House districts, kicks off on Tuesday. At stake is which party will control the House of Representatives during the final two years of Trump's second term in the White House.


DeSantis unveiled his plan for those maps on Monday, Fox News Digital exclusively reported, which shows the GOP gaining an extra four seats. 


"Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we’ve been fighting for fair representation ever since," DeSantis told Fox News Digital. "Our population has since grown dramatically, and we have moved from a Democrat majority to a 1.5 million Republican advantage. Drawing maps based on race, which is reflected in our current congressional districts, is unconstitutional and should be prohibited."

Republicans and Democrats over the past nine months have been redrawing the House district maps in states they control to gain partisan advantages heading into this year's midterm elections, when the GOP will be defending its razor-thin congressional majority.


Lawmakers in the GOP-dominated Florida legislature are meeting one week after voters in Virginia narrowly passed a referendum that, if it clears legal hurdles, will give the state's Democratic-controlled legislature — rather than the current nonpartisan commission — temporary redistricting power through the 2030 election. It could result in a 10-1 advantage for Democrats in Virginia's congressional delegation, up from their current 6-5 edge.


The vote in Virginia put more pressure on DeSantis to deliver a new map in Florida that could create between three and five more right-leaning congressional districts.

"Florida has the right and the intention to do it. And my view is that they should," House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Wednesday when asked if Florida's maps should be redrawn in time for the midterms.


A Florida-based Republican in the governor's wider political circle who asked for anonymity to speak more freely told Fox News Digital, "Gov. DeSantis is under tremendous pressure to deliver an answer to Virginia for Trump and Speaker Johnson."


The road ahead for DeSantis is not easy: the governor already pushed through a new House map four years ago, which helped secure the GOP's current 20-8 majority in Florida's U.S. House delegation. Redrawing the map again just four years later is harder.

There are also legal hurdles DeSantis faces: It is illegal under Florida's constitution to redraw maps for partisan gain, known as gerrymandering. Democrats have vowed lawsuits against any new map that may come out of Tallahassee.


U.S. House Democratic leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries last week took aim at what some are dubbing "dummymander," a play on words for "gerrymander," and argued that redrawing the maps in Florida — where the GOP suffered setbacks earlier this spring in special legislative elections — would harm Republican members of Congress.


"Our message to Florida Republicans is, ‘F around and find out,’" Jeffries told reporters as he referenced next week's redistricting legislative session. Jeffries said the redistricting move would lead Democrats to increase their target list of vulnerable Florida House Republicans.


He warned DeSantis and Republicans that "the electoral tide is turning in Florida."


Pushing back, DeSantis said, "Please. Be my guest. I will pay for you to come down to Florida to campaign."

"I’ll put you up in the Florida governor’s mansion. We will take you fishing," the governor added.


Not all Florida Republicans are on board with the effort, due to concerns it may backfire.

A Florida-based GOP strategist told Fox News Digital some Florida members of Congress "don't want this."


And pointing to the legislature, where there are some grumblings, the strategist, who asked to remain anonymous to speak clearly, said "some don't want to do it, but their hands will be forced."

Florida has already moved the filing deadline for congressional candidates back from April to June, but for candidates already running for Congress, the late-in-the-game map redraw brings plenty of complications.


"Changing the map changes the race. Candidates have been interviewed for a job description that just got a requirement change," veteran Florida-based GOP donor and bundler Dan Eberhart told Fox News Digital.

Eberhart noted that "these candidates are going to have to call an audible really soon - changing districts and probably new competitors."


Florida may be the final battlefield in a political war that started a year ago.

Aiming to prevent what happened during his first term in the White House when Democrats reclaimed the House majority in the 2018 midterms, Trump last spring first floated the idea of rare, but not unheard of, mid-decade congressional redistricting.


The mission was simple: redraw congressional district maps in red states to pad the GOP's fragile House majority to keep control of the chamber in the midterms, when the party in power traditionally faces political headwinds and loses seats.

When asked by reporters last summer about his plan to add Republican-leaning House seats across the country, the president said, "Texas will be the biggest one. And that’ll be five."

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas called a special session of the GOP-dominated state legislature to pass the new map.

But Democratic state lawmakers, who broke quorum for two weeks as they fled Texas in a bid to delay the passage of the redistricting bill, energized Democrats across the country.

Among those leading the fight against Trump's redistricting was Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.


California voters in November overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50, a ballot initiative that temporarily sidetracked the left-leaning state's nonpartisan redistricting commission and returned the power to draw the congressional maps to the Democratic-dominated legislature.


That is expected to result in five more Democratic-leaning congressional districts in California, which aimed to counter the move by Texas to redraw their maps.

The fight quickly spread beyond Texas and California.

"Canada Strong" Fund = excuse for Carney to Borrow Money for Liberal Friends' Projects

There are shades of this in the Canada Strong Fund: Carney claims that the fund will permit Canadians with “a bit of extra money” to buy it directly, by launching a “retail investment product” like a mutual fund or pension scheme where Canadians can buy into the fund and earn a dividend. To mitigate risk, investors’ capital will be government-protected : in other words, if investments lose money, the government (aka the taxpayer) will cover the loss.


The new fund is just another means of attracting private sector partners to investments that are risky or low return, better known as corporate welfare. Canada’s history is littered with such boondoggles, most recently Quebec’s investment in the failed Northvolt electric battery plant that zapped taxpayers to the tune of $270 million , and Ontario and Ottawa’s failed EV battery joint venture with Stellantis that also lost hundreds of millions of dollars .


The honest name for this new vehicle is the CCWF: the Canada Corporate Welfare Fund. But sovereign Wealth Fund sounds much better.

Spring Economic Update: Job market woes test young workers as unemployment exposure tells a worrying story

Four-in-five of those with exposure to job market say it’s either “bad” or “terrible”


April 29 , 2026 – While the national unemployment rate has held steady in recent months, a surge in youth unemployment and widespread pessimism about job prospects point to a labour market that feels far weaker than top-line numbers suggest. This,  as federal government announced plans Tuesday, to invest billions in skills training and workforce growth as part of the government’s spring economic statement.


New data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds concern over jobs and unemployment continues to rise among 18-to-24-year-old’s, with 38 per cent of Canadians in this group choosing it as a top issue, more than double the number who said this at the beginning of 2025 (18%).

Unemployment challenges go beyond the topline rate, however. One-in-six households report knowing someone currently unemployed and searching for work (16%), while many more say unemployment is affecting close friends or family (21%).

For those attempting to find a job that may help them overcome financial woes, the picture is bleak.


Four-in-five Canadians who are either looking for a job, or have someone close to them who is, describe the current job market as “bad” or “terrible,” with just 13 per cent offering a positive assessment. Among job seekers, the most common frustrations reflect a lack of response from employers and a perceived shortage of available jobs in their area.

While some indicators, such as cooling inflation and easing housing costs are offering relief, financial vulnerability remains entrenched for many. One-in-five Canadians (21%) fall into a “high financial pressure” category, marked by job insecurity and pessimism about the future. These individuals are far more likely to experience or be surrounded by unemployment and job insecurity. Further, three-in-five within this group say they expect their financial situation to be worse next year.


While some Canadians report their finances are improving, pain at the pump is felt across country. The war in Iran has led to a hike in oil and gas prices, which has more than three-quarters of Canadians (77%) saying they’ve taken a financial hit recently. Accordingly, 68 per cent say they’ve changed their behaviour since the war began, either driving less, cutting back in other areas, or combining trips. This is up from 63 per cent in the early weeks of the conflict.

  • · Just three-in-10 employed Canadians say they feel totally secure in their job, while 14 per cent feel insecure to some degree.

  • · The share of Canadians who say they are worse off than a year ago has fallen, but at 35 per cent remains roughly twice the proportion who say they are better off.
