Theme of the Week: Book of the Bible - Philippians
Bible Verse: What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ. Philippians 3:8 Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:1-9 I drive a Ford Focus. One of my co-workers does as well. Mine is a four-door sedan while his is a hatchback. His is newer than mine. His is red and mine is silver. Sometimes, we compare to see who has the better car. It is a very light competition, and we do it mostly to amuse ourselves. One day, a friend of mine leant me his car for the afternoon. It was a Lamborghini Aventador. He tossed me the keys and told me to bring the car back in a few hours. Now, that was a fun ride. Do you know what I never thought about while I was cruising around in that beautiful machine? I never thought about whose Ford Focus was better. I was driving something that erased all those insignificant comparisons. This is a bit of what Paul is talking about here. When he looks at his successes in life, the things that he accomplished, he can boast a bit. It’s not a bad resume. He did things that a lot of his Jewish peers would be envious of. But, when he compares those things to who Christ is and what Christ has done, they mean nothing. He calls them garbage. They are in the loss column compared to what he now has in Jesus. Because we can lose sight of eternity, we can mistakenly think that our successes and trophies are what make up our identity in this life. We couldn’t be farther from the truth. They mean nothing in the light of eternity. And they mean nothing in comparison to what Jesus has done for us. Paul is enamored with Christ. All he wants is Jesus; nothing else really matters. And because of that perspective, Paul lived the best life he could have. He was used powerfully by God and made a huge difference in the world even though he lost much in the process. Jesus is the best thing to ever happen to any of us. Let’s live with that truth always in the forefront of our minds. Prayer: Oh Lord Jesus, you are spectacular. You are the greatest inheritance that I could ever hope for. You call me son. You call me friend. You are my constant companion, me leader, my guide, my strength. Keep me from being captivated by the things that don’t matter. This world wants me preoccupied with personal gains, but they add up to a big fat zero in the grand scheme of things. You are my great reward. I love you and I want you more than anything else. Amen. Reflection: What are you using to measure your wealth and success? Is it your job? Your bank account? Your reputation? Or is it your relationship with Jesus?

But to accomplish this goal, we need to narrow the financial advantage the establishment parties—the Liberals, Conservatives, and NDP— have over us. Another BIG BOX retailer has fallen!
Tell Waterstones to remove this book from their shortlist and stop pushing gender ideology at children. This time it’s the turn of Waterstones, a major childrens book retailer who has previously enjoyed a good reputation with the public not just for stocking a wide selection of books on many diverse topics, but also for their highly literate staff. Waterstones has always been a family-friendly store, a place where you can leave the kids to browse to their hearts content in the children’s and young persons sections while you sneak off to pick up the latest blockbuster! Not anymore. Waterstones has gone woke. They’ve nominated a book with an adult advisory warning which contains disturbing cartoons promoting the transgender cause, for their prestigious children’s book award. This book is being celebrated by the left and pushed worldwide. So, help us make some noise.
What makes me so angry about this, is that the Waterstones’ Children’s book award carries a lot of cachet. It’s a great honour to be nominated and books on the shortlist can expect to receive a significant boost to their sales and publicity. School libraries and other organisations entrusted with making reading recommendations for children will trustingly accept this nomination as a guarantee of good quality. Stores will place the nominated books on table displays which enjoy a large footfall of children to encourage them to browse and make a purchase. This is not a book that should be read by vulnerable and impressionable children.
I’ll tell you why. Firstly, it is written by a transgender-identified female who a few years ago crowdfunded for her breast removal surgery and now takes hormones in an attempt to resemble a man. The book entitled ‘my trans teen misadventure’ appears to be nothing more than the author seeking to validate and project her own feelings. Secondly, the book contains an adult content advisory warning on the back. Which begs the question of why it has been included on a shortlist of books for children?! Most likely because the Head of Children’s books at Waterstones has subscribed to gender ideology.
The book isn’t even a textual story, it’s in cartoon format and though it is recommended for ages 14 and over, it is inevitable that it will attract the attention of much younger children. As you can see from the above photo, one of the pages contains an illustration of female anatomy that encourages girls to hate on their perfectly normal and natural bodies, with labels such as ‘fatty lumps that ought to be removed’, ‘hips from hell’ and, incredibly, ‘imaginary willy’. That is absolutely not something that I would want any of my adolescent daughters to encounter and I’m sure you wouldn’t want your daughters, grandaughters or nieces to see either!
If teaching girls to be disgusted by their own bodies was not bad enough, my trans teen misdaventure goes even further and publishes a misleading and one-sided promotion of puberty blockers. It features a cartoon of a child being injected with either puberty blockers or cross sex hormones by a nurse accompanied by the caption ‘at last I got the key, just in time before Uni, my life was on pause, now it can start’. This is blatant propaganda which aims to rush children down the path of irreversible medical transition before they are fully grown adults. Another cartoon in the book dismisses the concept of gender-transition regret and misleads readers into believing that puberty blockers do nothing more than ‘press pause’ on puberty without mentioning any of the harmful side effects. A woman with a beard cheerfully tells her companion that transitioning ‘was the best thing I ever did’. Many countries across the world have outlawed puberty blockers being given to children because of safety concerns and yet Waterstones are promoting a book that complains that they are no longer so easily available. This is not literature that enlightens or inspires children. It is an egregious attempt to get children to uncritically accept gender theory. In a normal and sane world there is absolutely no way that a book of this nature would make its way onto a children’s reading list. The head of Waterstones’ childrens thinks pledging allegiance to the rainbow flag is more important than enriching and stretching the imaginations of their young readers.

Here is a summary: The current crisis in Israel is not sudden but has been building up for 35 years. In that time, the Supreme Court took on more powers and began overturning laws and making its own. It justified this overreach using a “reasonableness doctrine” and arbitrary standards. This led to the court ruling like an oligarchy.
Recently, PM Netanyahu campaigned on and pursued judicial reforms to address problems with the court’s power. The reforms aim to limit the attorney general’s authority, end the left-wing dominance of judges, require solid reasoning to strike down laws, establish a constitution, and limit when courts can strike down laws.
Only supermajority votes, all justices participating, and allowing the Knesset to override could strike down laws. Opponents argue the latter will end democracy in Israel. Supporters say it corrects the court’s overreach. The crisis erupted as Netanyahu pursued these reforms.
The justification for this judicial overreach was found in the “reasonableness doctrine”. When a case or law is brought before the Supreme Court, they are allowed to ascertain whether or not it could be considered “reasonable” by their own arbitrary standards. This is a lot of leeway, particularly for a liberal, activist court, such as the one that exists in Israel today.
The result, according to one pundit I respect, has been that our nation is now ruled by a judicial oligarchy. But if this has been building up for 35 years, why has it suddenly blown up now? It is because Benjamin Netanyahu ran his latest campaign on a platform of judicial reform, and the majority of Israelis voted him back in. Once in office, he sought to fulfill his pledge. The reform bill that he put forth seeks to correct five very obvious problems: 1. Remove attorney general overreach. Right now, rather than simply advising the government, the attorney general has the authority to dictate. This corrects his role from boss to adviser. 2. Currently, the judiciary has veto power over judge nominations. This has led to generational leftism amongst the judges wherein liberal judges beget liberal judges. The reform will limit the authority over judicial appointments. 3. As mentioned above, the “reasonableness doctrine” has given the judiciary the power to arbitrarily override any decision coming out of the administration or the Knesset. Judicial reform will require there be more solid reasoning for striking down a decision than just “we don’t agree with that.” 4. Israel does not have a formal constitution. Rather, it has an incremental constitution based on 13 Basic Laws. Judicial reform says that the Supreme Court cannot strike down any of the Basic Laws. 5. Judicial reform says that the courts can use Basic Laws to strike down new laws, but only under certain conditions. Those conditions require that all 15 justices must participate in the decision, there must be a supermajority of the justices voting against the law, and the Knesset must have the opportunity to override the decision. It is the third in that list that opponents to reform say will bring the end of democracy in Israel. This is a seminal moment in the history of my nation, Israel. As such, I have decided to make this week’s newsletter a Special Edition focusing on the current crisis.
