Thought(s) for the Day:

New Wine

… from [the Desk of Patrick Bestall]

The "Jesus Revolution" movie, and the recent outbreak of revival at several dozen universities (starting at Asbury U.) has excited many to think of a fresh outpouring of the Spirit in our cities. I remember the Jesus People movement well since my wife and I were actively part of it in London and Toronto before our son was born in Nov. of 1974. Maranatha music was born and we sang their folksy songs with our guitars in Victoria park as well as in the communes and churches which would dare to open their doors to us on weeknights. It was also a time of the Charismatic movement which broke out in churches in the late sixties. Of special interest to us was the appearance of a magazine called New Wine, which many of us read and handed out along with our Jesus tracks and tabloids (the paper we published in London was called Follow Me). The cover of its fourth issue has a picture of young people getting baptized in the ocean just like the poster for the Jesus Revolution movie,

The favorite scripture of many was Luke 5:37-39

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’

This scripture can be easily misunderstood. People want new wine but forget the part where Jesus says, "The old wine is better".

Yes, by all means, let us pray for and enjoy fresh outpourings of God's spirit on ground which has gone dry. And let us accept the new wineskins the new kinds of church that come with it. For those who are into the new wine, the old wine may seem too expensive, or too rare, or too confusing when it comes to choosing which kind wine is best. But experience of the Trinity should turn Christians into connoisseurs that come to appreciate the variety of flavors in the old wines.

At 80 years of age next month, I qualify to be an old wineskin. The new wine of my youth has fermented and I love its enriched flavor. I love the tradition of my parish, and have an enhanced appreciation for the religion of our forefathers. I can sing "Give me that old time religion" and an Orthodox chant with equal enthusiasm. I have a harder time singing the new songs of a fresh generation, and make no apology for it. When I'm in a new wineskin fellowship, I'll enjoy the new wine knowing that it's necessary for a new generation of grapes. But I don't try to bring it into an old wineskin fellowship where it can blow up in our faces.

So I want to remind us old wineskins to be happy with the aging wine within us and not feel obligated to "get with the times" nor push new Christians into old wineskins. Let us also appreciate how some of us have turned out to be bubbly champagne while others have mellowed into subtle dinner wines, even slightly acidic. I have a friend who is like muscatel, sweet and spicy. I know some congregations which are definitely musky. It's our job to remind beginners in the faith that their new wine should not be all about the alcohol content. Getting high in the Lord is fun for awhile, but there's a time to mellow out and enjoy the maturity of faith which accompanies fasting and surviving hard times.

St. Paul reminded us of these things when he wrote to the Christians in Corinth where they were abundantly blessed with the new wine of many supernatural gifts poured out on them by the Holy Spirit, including the ability to speak with a variety of tongues of men and of angels. But he was quick to give them the wisdom of his years, teaching them that it didn't matter how many miracles they could experience, or how much they sacrificed for the poor and for God, if they didn't have God's kind of love in them it meant nothing. We may have different gifts and fruit of the spirit like many kinds of wine, but if it leads us to argue, be impatient, proud or competitive with each other, it has come from vine branches that must be cut off just as Jesus warned the churches in the Book of Revelation. This applies to both the new wine and the old. [Patrick Bestall]

A revived email scam in the form of a fake PayPal invoice for a Google Pixel phone is making the rounds, and email users are warned to immediately report and delete it."Online scammers are always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to trick people into giving them their personal and financial information," writes ... "Online scammers are always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to trick people into giving them their personal and financial information," writes MalwareTips' Stelian Pilci.

"Such scams just never fade away. This week, they’ve appeared again disguised as Google Pixel phone order confirmation emails," according to Trend Micro.

How does the PayPal Pixel scam work?

The scam begins with an emailed invoice or text message purportedly from PayPal. Since the scammers create a PayPal account specifically for this purpose, the email may, at first glance, appear legitimate.

It's not.

In one version of the scam, the subject line may say "Invoice from Pixel (0223)," as MalwareTips explains.

The message inside the email will likely say Pixel, a popular smartphone developed by Google, has sent an invoice which is due on receipt.

Clicking on the link in the email will send victims to a fake PayPal login screen that closely mimics the real thing. Once you enter your PayPal login details, the fraudsters have access to your account, from which they can steal personal and financial information.

In addition, clicking through on the link may infect your device with malware.

To snag more savvy consumers who raise an eyebrow at clicking through on a link that seems sketchy, the scammers also provide a phone number. In one current version of the scam, that phone number is 1-808-320-5276, Trend Micro explains.

The "customer service" phone number is not PayPal's. If you call it, you will hear from the scammers posing as PayPal representatives who will try to convince you to hand over your sensitive information.

People who receive the email should not click any links, nor open any attachments, nor provide any information whatsoever to the scammers. Instead, users should delete the email and report it as spam, experts advise.

The screenshots below represent how the scam may appear. Consumer Protection of Western Australia posted the screenshot compilation on Facebook in February as scam alert, urging people to remain vigilant and to report any phishing attempts that hit users' inboxes. In the United States, references to AUD would be replaced with American dollars. [The BLAZE Media]

Mexican President Called Out for Encouraging Hispanics in American Not To Vote Republican:

Bakhmut:

Here you have Russia's elite Wagner troops fighting amateurs who are forced to stream into the city with guns they they've never used before. Commanders call it a "meat grinder". Meanwhile Ukraine's elite neo-Nazi divisions are assigned terrorist attacks inside Russia.

· Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Sunday the situation in Bakhmut was “tough, very tough”, as both sides report heavy casualties.

· At least one person was wounded in the southern Russian region of Belgorod after Moscow’s forces shot down four missiles, the region’s governor said.

Fyodor Venislavsky, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, said that parliament is “not satisfied” with certain mobilization methods. He promised that after the hearing, which is yet to be held, recommendations will be developed for “defining clear boundaries within which representatives of military enlistment offices can and cannot act”. Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar wrote on her Telegram-channel that the ministry also intends to improve the work of military enlistment offices, given the levels of public dissatisfaction.

On Sunday, Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said the situation in Bakhmut was “tough, very tough”.

“The closer we are to the centre of the city, the harder the fighting … The Ukrainians throw in endless reserves. But we are advancing and we will be advancing,” Prigozhin said in comments released by his press service.

House Democrat admits Jan. 6 committee never saw the footage revealed by Tucker Carlson:

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MI), according to CNN, just admitted that the House Jan. 6 Committee was never given the opportunity to thoroughly examine the footage that has been recently revealed by the Fox News Channel's Tucker Carlson.

In case you missed it, Carlson, over the past week, has been releasing surveillance footage from the Capitol protest that occurred on Jan 6, 2021. He has been doing so on his program Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Carlson has been given the opportunity to do so by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who has granted Carlson exclusive access to some 40,000 hours of security camera footage from the Capitol Building.

The footage, thus far, has largely contradicted the narrative being pushed by many - including Thompson and the House Jan. 6 that he chaired - namely, that former President Donald Trump incited his supporters to launch a violent insurrection on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Now, Thompson is claiming that, basically, he and his committee never saw the footage.

CNN's Alayna Treene reported on Wednesday:

.@BennieGThompson, former chair of the Jan. 6 committee, said lawmakers were never given that type of access to the footage last Congress. “It’s strictly a new policy that the new speaker has put in place," he told CNN.

Treene continued by reporting, "Thompson said he doesn’t think any of the Jan. 6 members themselves ever had access to the footage — they let only staff view it."

"I'm actually not aware of any member of the committee who had access," Thompson is quoted as saying. "We had a team of employees who kind of went through the video."

As Jon Dougherty, of the Conservative Brief, points out, Thompson's statements are particularly problematic.

Dougherty writes:

Regardless of whether the panel members’ staff simply skimmed through the video or were already aware of it but opted to keep it hidden, the January 6 investigation was supposedly tasked by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for delivering an impartial and precise account of the event.

Of course, "impartiality" is anything but what the very partisan House Jan. 6 committee gave the American people.

This is why McCarthy has given Carlson access to the footage: he is looking to expose the way the Democrats tried to use Jan. 6 for their political gain.

"What I want to produce for everybody is exactly what I said that people can actually look at it and see what’s gone on that day," McCarthy recently said.

"Each person can come up with their own conclusion [about the footage], but what I just want to make sure is I had transparency," he added.

Federal Judge finds Joe Biden's border policies to be unlawful:

According to Fox News, this past week, a federal judge ruled that President Joe Biden's "Parole + ATD" program is unlawful. "ATD" stands for "Alternatives to Detention."

The New York Post explains:

· Parole + ATD has been used by the Department of Homeland Security as an alternative to detaining migrants and releasing them with Notices to Appear that set a court date, a process that keeps migrants in custody much longer. Under Parole + ATD, migrants are fitted with ankle bracelets or subject to phone monitoring and told to check-in with immigration authorities when they reach their destination in the US.

The Biden administration, according to the Post, has been using "Parole + ATD" since 2021.

But, the program is now being legally challenged by the state of Florida, where over 100,000 migrants have been released by the Biden administration, placing a significant financial burden on the state.

Florida, in its lawsuit, argues that the Biden administration - in releasing illegal immigrants into the state - is violating statutes that require that migrants be detained, and Florida argues that the administration is doing so by the Parole + ATD and related "non-detention" policies.

The Biden administration disputes this, claiming that there it does not have an overarching "non-detention policy" and that it has the discretion to choose whether or not detain illegal aliens arriving in the U.S.

The judge in the case - Judge T. Ken Wethererell, an appointee of former President Donald Trump - has sided with Florida.

In his opinion, Wethererell writes:

The evidence establishes that Defendants have effectively turned the Southwest Border into a meaningless line in the sand and little more than a speedbump for aliens flooding into the country by prioritizing "alternatives to detention" over actual detention and by releasing more than a million aliens into the country — on "parole" or pursuant to the exercise of "prosecutorial discretion" under a wholly inapplicable statute — without even initiating removal proceedings.

Wethererell adds that "there is nothing inherently inhumane or cruel about detaining aliens pending completion of their immigration proceedings."

Now, we are waiting to see whether or not the Biden administration is going to file an appeal.

In the meantime, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) is celebrating the victory.

Moody released a statement, saying:

Today’s ruling affirms what we have known all along, President Biden is responsible for the border crisis and his unlawful immigration policies make this country less safe. A federal judge is NOW ordering Biden to follow the law, and his administration should immediately begin securing the border to protect the American people.

It's unlikely that this is going to happen. Under Biden's watch, 1.7 million illegal immigrants entered the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2021, 2.3 million entered in Fiscal Year 2022, and Fiscal Year 2023 may end up being the worse one yet.

BIDEN DESPERATE TO CENSOR THIS MARINE INTERVIEW:

During the American pullout from Afghanistan, Tyler Vargas-Andrews, who is a Marine sergeant, sobbed as he described seeing 13 American soldiers slain by a suicide bomber.

Vargas-Andrews spoke on his time in Afghanistan in front of the Foreign Affairs House Committee. In August 2021, Vargas-Andrews, who was a Marine sniper at that time, and his group were sent from Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan, to supervise the last few weeks of the American pullout.

Vargas-Andrews and the other snipers were assigned to the airport’s Abbey Gate after arriving there in the middle of August. Here, the Marines handled thousands of Afghan refugees fleeing Afghanistan, and had to turn away thousands more, and kept an eye on Taliban and all other terrorist activity just outside of the gate.

“Thousands flocked to Abbey Gate. First and foremost, we were watching for anyone who had a blue passport. Infants were dying, people were dehydrated, suffering from severe malnutrition, and it was extremely hot.” In his prepared testimony, Vargas-Andrews claimed, “Afghans who had been brutalized and tormented by the Taliban swarmed up to us pleading for assistance. Some Afghans who turned their backs on the HKIA attempted suicide by hanging from the razor wire we installed as a deterrence. When compared to the Taliban’s torturing, they believed this was mild. The Taliban regularly killed countless Afghans 155 yards across from our position, day and night.”

According to Vargas-Andrews, the State Dept.’s “unwillingness” to assist with airport operations added to the commotion.

ISIS terrorists practiced using an improvised explosive in a terror strike on August 22. After receiving a description of the alleged terrorist bomber on August 26, Vargas-Andrews’ squad later that day located a man at the Abbey gate who matched the description and he continued “nervously” staring at the Marines posted nearby.

According to Vargas-Andrews, his squad twice requested authorization to kill the alleged terrorist. He was turned down the first time. The commander responded, “I don’t know,” when asked if they had the authorization to kill the suspect the second time after personally visiting the suspect at Abbey Gate.

“Myself and my squad captain sternly questioned, “Well, who does? Since you are responsible for this, sir,” Vargas-Andrews told Congress. The commander said he will investigate in response.”

“We never heard from anyone and never got a response. The person eventually vanished,” according to Vargas-Andrews. “We still think he was the suicide bomber, to this day.”

A few hours later, a bomb explosion outside Abbey Gate killed 13 American service members and an estimated 170 Afghans. Vargas-Andrews suffered severe burns, losing his left leg, right arm, left kidney, and portions of his colon and intestines in the explosion. Since then, he’s undergone numerous surgeries.

Vargas-Andrews had to pause numerous times during his recollection of the events on August 26 in order to fight back tears.

“Our best is what we provide to America,” he added, adding that “our military personnel and veterans deserve nothing less. In my perspective, the withdrawal was a calamity, and there was an unacceptable lack of responsibility and carelessness. There has been no explanation for the murders of the eleven Marines, one Soldier, and one Sailor that day.”

Democrats Find the Easiest Way for Trump To Win 2024:

As of this writing, the 2024 presidential election is just 20 months away, and the speculation and backroom dealings are at least as fascinating as the political punditry and public happenings.

However, at this early stage, the two important questions are who might oppose Joe Biden for the Democratic candidacy and who might oppose Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

While the majority of Democratic politicians have taken care not to criticize the more mentally impaired Biden (at least not yet), reports suggest that Democrats are secretly afraid of the prospect of a Biden campaign. The Republican Party’s opposition (and support) to a third Trump nomination is somewhat more vocal yet divided.

So once more, the two main queries are: If not Biden for the Democrats, then whom? And if and when Ron DeSantis will enter the race, which expert predictions predict will happen by early summer.

So, as of right now, that is the situation. But is it?

A well-known Democratic-backed think tank is raising the alarm about potential attempts to form a third-party presidential nominee in 2024, according to the Washington Examiner, and cautioning that the move could throw the election to Trump, regardless of the eventual Democrat ticket.

In response to the policy organization Third Way’s Tuesday warning that “both major political parties might nominate divisive candidates for president that a vast majority of Americans finds unacceptable,” No Labels has allegedly been secretly preparing for months to complete a bipartisan “unity ticket” in 2024.

From Third Way, here is more:

“The centrist President Biden fits under this “unacceptable” group, according to No Labels. The bottom line is that their candidate will “succeed in electing Trump,” according to Paul Begala, and “cannot win the presidency.”

With very few exceptions, to say Joe Biden is a “moderate” is to dismiss his radical shift to the left from the first Day of his catastrophic presidency.

Because it thinks Trump will win the election if a third-party candidate runs in 2024, Third Way is likewise afraid of the idea. While No Labels, a left-“leaning” organization, fears a Trump victory and thinks Biden couldn’t defeat him; therefore, it wants to pick a candidate it thinks can defeat Trump.

What happens, though, if neither Trump nor Biden secures their respective nominations? If “this path outside the two major party candidates is not needed,” No Label asserts that it will “stand down.” However, the committee has not outlined its “not needed” standards.

In one way or another, the 2024 presidential election is probably going to go down in history.
