Conservative MPs Jamil Jivani and Aaron Gunn warned that free expression in Canada is under siege, not only from political violence, but from government institutions themselves.

Speaking with True North following a panel discussion, the two argued that Ottawa’s criminal investigation into journalist Keean Bexte’s reporting raises alarming questions about whether dissenting voices in media and politics are being silenced at a time when open debate is more vital than ever.


Jivani and Gunn spoke with True North about the investigation following a panel discussion Thursday evening with conservative Ajax candidate and radio host Greg Brady at 99 King in Bowmanville. The panel discussion primarily focused on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which happened the day before, and the importance of independent and alternative media.


“My first reaction, not being an expert on the case, but my first reaction is, that Elections Canada needs to be really careful about chilling free speech,” Jivani said. “Just reporting on the issue is the problem. From what I understand, they didn't object to the substance of what he reported. It wasn't an unethical news report. They are objecting to the influence of the news report or the timing of the news report, and that is not great for a free society.”

The Elections Commissioner informed Bexte that he was under criminal investigation for a potential breach of section 91(1) of the Canada Election Act for his reporting on allegations sources made against the Liberal candidate for Calgary Federation, Thomas Keeper.


The section makes it a criminal offence to knowingly publish false information about a candidate during an election with the intent to sway the election. Juno News and Bexte have denied this allegation, standing by their report. If found guilty of breaching the act, Bexte could face a fine of up to $50,000 and up to five years imprisonment.


“I worry that other journalists, other young people, are going to see stuff like that and then now feel constrained by how they do their jobs,” Jivani told True North. “At the end of the day, like, the common thread between that example or what happened with Charlie Kirk is this idea of like, are people free to have a different point of view, or are institutions feeling like, entitled to crack down on them and try to stifle the ability to articulate different ideas.”


Jivani called the vilification of those with differing beliefs and attempts to stifle unfavourable reporting “very unhealthy.”


“As a person who spends my time talking to Canadians every day, it's my job to read emails that are sent to my office, to talk to people in my community. I really believe Canadians are far more open-minded than a lot of the powerful people running this country are,” he said. “ I think Canadians are open to debates and different perspectives. And in fact, regardless of where they fall in the political spectrum, I think we all feel like we have to accept other points of view just to live our lives in a diverse country.”


He feels many of Canada’s institutions and media outlets are “completely out of sync” with Canadians.


“That is a huge red flag to me. We deserve a country where the values and the morality of the people are reflected in the institutions that we fund with our taxpayer dollars. And when that's not happening, we have a problem,” Jivani said. “It needs to be fixed. And frankly, this is one of the reasons why I'm a Member of Parliament, because I want an alignment between the good-natured values of the Canadian people and the institutions that they fund.”


Gunn said he’s not familiar with all the case details but broadly stressed the importance of free speech, expression, and freedom of the press as “fundamental pillars” of Western society.


“ I don't think we ever want to be in a situation where journalists are intimidated, where political commentators are intimidated. And in a way, this goes back, obviously, in a much different context. But even what happened in the United States,” he said, referencing the assassination of Kirk. “You were having somebody who was killed, who was murdered in cold blood, who was assassinated because he had a particular point of view and had the audacity to express that point of view in public.”

He added that Canadians should never fear expressing their political views or writing in pursuit of truth as journalists.


“We never want to see journalists intimidated. We never want to see political commentators having to second-guess what they're saying. People should be allowed to speak their truth, and people should be allowed to disagree with that and disagree with it strongly,” Gunn said.


Gunn said he was impacted by reading a headline that a conservative commentator had been assassinated because he had held that title "just five months ago."

“It hits really close to home. Makes you think about things, but I think for most conservatives that I talked to, it's made them more determined than ever to keep up this fight,” Gunn said. “We're not going to be intimidated, and we're just going to keep fighting for the truth and for the courage of our convictions.”

You know when you’re winning the fight because they throw everything at you to try to keep you quiet. Our government, msm and judicial system continuously find ways to set narratives to intimidate Canadians. We see this with Chris Barber and Tamara Lich yet actual criminals who sexually assault children, kill fathers in front of their children get what? Oh yeah bail not jail.

More and more and this falls 100% on the shoulders of the Liberals and the faithful servants in the bureaucracy and MSM.

Canada has lost the script on Democracy and certainly on Free Speech and Freedom of the Press.


The MSM for the most part have become faithful, bought and paid for servants of and propagandists for the Liberal Government.

Agencies like Elections Canada who pretend to be impartial but keep showing over and over again this is hardly the case.


Our Judiciary which for the most part (and yes there is the odd exception) has been and is making a farce of our supposed Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It seems almost now continuously ruling against the rights and freedoms making the Charter as worthless a piece of paper as that which the Liberals in power use to wipe their useless rear ends.


Worse, in some cases using their powers to punish those who have attempted to exercise what they thought were the Democratic Charter Rights.

Canada it does appear has fallen.

Former CBC Host files Human Rights Complaint against CBC:

Travis Dhanraj, a former CBC News anchor, has lodged a human rights complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. He alleges that the Crown corporation discriminated against him based on race, forcing him out of his position. In July, Dhanraj said he was “forced to resign” from the public broadcaster after raising internal concerns about tokenism, editorial bias, and what he described as a culture of exclusion, retaliation, and psychological harm.

Dhanraj’s complaint alleges he initially “took on the role of host of Canada Tonight because, based on representations made by CBC, he would be the driving force of the show, booking guests, and reflecting the range of opinions, lived experiences and interests of contemporary Canada.”


During his time in the position he “quickly realized that diversity was not a true practice of the CBC and would never be a part of their agenda” and was “met with resistance at every point” when attempting to book guests with differing opinions.

“When Mr. Dhanraj attempted to book guests, particularly conservatives; he was met with resistance,” reads the complaint.


The complaint alleged that after Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman appeared on his show, “he was threatened with discipline, including being pulled off the air.”


The friction between Dhanraj and the CBC over editorial control created a “toxic work environment in which harassment, bullying, and retaliation went unchecked” and ultimately led to his dismissal over the summer.

He also claims the CBC repeatedly “attempted to coerce” him into signing an NDA and “resign under duress while on medical leave.”


Dhanraj’s career in broadcast journalism began at the CBC 20 years ago. He also worked for CP24, CTV News and Global News before returning to the Crown corporation in 2021. Before hosting Canada Tonight, he was a senior parliamentary reporter and co-host of Marketplace.


His CHRC complaint also says he believes his dismissal was tied to an X post he made about then-CBC president Catherine Tait declining to be interviewed on Canada Tonight, which he called “unfortunate.”


Following the post, Dhanraj alleges that CBC began an "intense investigation" against him to find possible violations of its policies and journalistic standards and temporarily removed him from the air.


“There was an internal discussion that the decision to remove him was retaliation against him for the April 2024 tweet, and his past attempts to address the toxic work environment at CBC. Mr. Dhanraj was hauled into disciplinary meetings and was given a written warning clearly designed to silence and demoralize him,” reads the complaint.


Dhanraj also alleges CBC anchors Rosemary Barton and David Cochrane "harassed and bullied" him, which CBC management enabled.

“Dhanraj quickly realized he had been chosen to host Canada Tonight because the CBC expected him to be the "token" brown man,” the complaint adds.


“As such, Mr. Dhanraj requested a DEI Investigation on February 20, 2024, but no such investigation took place. When Mr. Dhanraj met with CBC management in February 2024, he was sidelined. Management accused him of putting up a "crusade" and he was told to "work within the system" rather than challenge it. In other words, he was expected to put his head down and be compliant.”


CBC spokesperson Kerry Kelly told True North that it “can only reiterate in the strongest terms possible that CBC rejects his version of events.”

“We are dismayed by these attacks on our hosts and newsroom leaders. We will vigorously defend against false claims, including allegations of political bias in guest selection,” said Kelly.


Additionally, Kelly said that Dhanraj remains a unionized employee who is on leave.

“His lawyer has been aware for many weeks of what is required for CBC to process his resignation, however, CBC to this date has received no response on the matter,” said Kelly.


Dhanrah’s lawyer, Kathryn Marshall, announced that he has “sued the CBC for discrimination, retaliation and rampant mistreatment” in a post to X on Friday.

“This needs to end. No one should ever be treated this way in the workplace,” wrote Marshall.

Utah Governor Says It's Too Soon to be Sure of Motive on Kirk Shooting But Suspect Was on the Left:

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Sunday that investigators are not ready to discuss the motive behind the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. But he said the 22-year-old suspect had left-leaning political beliefs and disliked the conservative influencer.

“Clearly a leftist ideology," Cox told NBC's “Meet the Press.” On CNN's “State of the Union,” he said, “That information comes from the people around him, his family members and friends."


Cox said Robinson is “not cooperating” and that friends paint a picture of someone

radicalized in the dark corners of the internet. “Clearly there was a lot of gaming going on,” Cox said on NBC. “Friends have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture, and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep.”


A Republican who's called on all partisans to tone down their rhetoric following the attack, the governor added: “I really don’t have a dog in this fight. If this was a radicalized MAGA person, I’d be saying that as well.”


Cox stressed on several Sunday morning news shows, however, that investigators are still trying to pin down a motive for the attack on the father of two and Trump confidant, who was killed Wednesday while on one of his signature college speaking tours at Utah Valley University. The governor said more information may come out once the suspect, Tyler Robinson, appears in court Tuesday.


The governor said the suspect's partner was transgender, which some politicians have pointed to as a sign Robinson was targeting Kirk for his anti-trans views. But authorities have not said whether it is relevant as they investigate Robinson’s motive.

“The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to female,” Cox said. “I can say that he has been incredibly cooperative, this partner has been very cooperative, had no idea that this was happening.”


Investigators have spoken to Robinson’s relatives and carried out a search warrant at his family’s home in Washington, about 240 miles (390 kilometers) southwest of Utah Valley University, where the shooting took place.


State records show Robinson is registered to vote but not affiliated with a political party and is listed as inactive, meaning he did not vote in the two most recent general elections. His parents are registered Republicans.


Ammunition found with the weapon used to kill Kirk was engraved with taunting, anti-fascist and meme-culture messages. Court records show that one bullet casing had the message, “Hey, fascist! Catch!”


Robinson grew up around St. George, in the southwestern corner of Utah between Las Vegas and natural landmarks including Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks.

Robinson became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, known widely as the Mormon church, at a young age, church spokesperson Doug Andersen said.


Robinson has two younger brothers, and his parents have been married for about 25 years, according to social media posts. Online activity by Robinson’s mother reflects an active family that took vacations to Disneyland, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Alaska.

Like many in that part of Utah, they frequently spent time outdoors — boating, fishing, riding ATVs, zip-lining and target shooting. A 2017 post shows the family visiting a military facility and posing with assault rifles. A young Robinson is seen smiling as he grips the handles of a .50-caliber heavy machine gun.


A high school honor roll student who scored in the 99th percentile nationally on standardized tests, he was admitted to Utah State University in 2021 on a prestigious academic scholarship, according to a video of him reading his acceptance letter that was posted to a family member’s social media account.


But he attended for only one semester, according to the university. He is currently enrolled as a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George.
